Beginning with seagrass meadows on Sanday, Orkney, this talk explores how participatory mapping and local knowledge can reveal the often-missing layers of meaning, memory, and lived experience that shape our understanding of coastal places. What began as MSc research into seagrass and sense of place has grown into an ongoing collaboration connecting ecological science with community-led responses to coastal erosion and climate change. Drawing on collaborative research and community engagement, I will consider how different ways of knowing and representing place can complement, challenge, and extend conventional scientific approaches, culminating in the hot-off-the-press zine Flat Time & Fluid Space: Re/collections from Sanday. Through maps, stories, and recollections, the talk asks what we might learn by attending to the shifting relationships between people, ecologies, land, sea, and time.
